INTERNACIONAL CONFERENCE

MAKING THE COLLECTIVE CITY: REFLECTIONS ON PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES

8 - 9 JUNE 2017

This international conference will be an opportunity to discuss participation in architecture and urbanism and its role in defining common practices, policy measures and urban management strategies, in order to respond to issues of urban governance and the social needs of inhabitants.

In contemporary society, a time marked by globalisation, social and economic instability, a weakening of administrative “capacities” and increasingly complex social dynamics, new actors are emerging to support the development of community initiatives. Within this context, the conference aims to promote debate and reflection on methodological approaches applied in Participatory Projects in Architecture, Urbanism and Design.

The conference will focus on two central themes:

1. Theoretical perspectives on the co-production of cities

2. New approaches and challenges for participatory processes.

THEMES

  1. Theoretical perspectives on the co-production of cities:

  • The role of interdisciplinarity in the co-production of the city

  • Innovations in participatory methods

  • Evaluating projects and measuring the impact of participation

  • Issues of scale in co-design projects

  • The social role of architects and urbanists

  2. New approaches and challenges for participatory processes:

  • The role of actors, relationships and power

  • Building community resilience through participation

  • Comparative approaches to participation from the global north and south

  • The social role of architects and urbanists

  • Inclusivity and the dynamics within participatory processes
